Flowers and Ceramics

Michelle Hartney Flowers & Ceramics blends sustainability, artistry, and activism to redefine how we experience flowers. Motivated to raise awareness about the floral industry’s large carbon footprint, I started a micro-flower farm in Chicago. I grow flowers on my property and hydroponically in my basement, offering local flower subscriptions to my community. Inspired by Debra Prinzing’s Slow Flower Movement and Erin Benzakein’s dedication to floral beauty and education, I aim to provide ethically grown flowers year-round.

My ceramics practice complements this mission, as I craft functional and decorative pieces, including vases with built-in flower frogs—an eco-friendly alternative to floral foam. I also create wheel-thrown and hand-built planters, colanders, and small sculptures. Flowers and Ceramics is not just about aesthetics; it’s about fostering mindful consumption, supporting local agriculture, and advocating for a more ethical floral industry.
