The masks are made with an outer layer of cotton broadcloth, and an internal layer of cotton flannel with a pocket for a filter option. This style of mask ties at the back, so it is adjustable and will not cause irritation to the back of your ears.

Every mask will be sent with a signed certificate of authenticity. For every mask sold I will donate one to a Chicago hospital. These masks are functional pieces of art meant to be worn, washed, and reused.

The masks are made from leftover fabric from Mother’s Right, an installation about America’s high maternal mortality rate. Along with local midwives and doulas, we sewed 1,200 hospital gowns, one for every woman who died during childbirth in the US in 2013.

The fabric print was created using hand drawings of the plant derivatives of the drugs that have been used on laboring women for the past 150 years. The print on this mask is ergot, the plant derivative of a drug once used to induce labor.
